The intermolecular coupling of alkynes with alkenes is one of the most atom-efficient strategies to prepare substituted 1,3-dienes, which are important organic intermediates. Ru/CeO2 together with sodium formate acted as excellent recyclable solid catalysts toward the intermolecular coupling of internal or terminal alkynes with acrylates to give the corresponding 1,3-dienes in high yields. These catalysts also realized the coupling of norbornene and acrylates. Furthermore, Ru/CeO2 catalysts also efficiently promoted the synthesis of indole via intramolecular dehydrogenative N-heterocyclization of 2-(2-aminophenyl)ethanol.
