On November 2, 2022, KPMG Private Enterprise’s Global Tech Innovator 2022 final event took place in Lisbon, Portugal. 22 innovative start-up finalists joined vying for the global crown to stand on top of over 1,100 competitors from across the world. FIMECS, Inc., a startup that Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., LTD. has invested in, represented Japan on the final competition stage, pitching its innovative technologies with its ambitious business plan. FIMECS, Inc. finished in the 2nd place.

Given the current status of more Japanese start-ups being expected, but yet to go global, the FIMECS’s runner-up position at the final stage has demonstrated the global competitiveness of Japanese deep tech companies; in particular, it was a showcase of the rich profile of startups Kyoto University has collaborated with. FIMECS, Inc. was founded by the former scientists from Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, including the CEO Yusuke Tominari and the CSO Kanae Gamo. The company is driving its research and business enterprise through a collaborative research partnership with Kyoto University as well as business and financial support from Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., LTD.

Kyoto University will continue to strongly support startup creation. We expect to see more startups go global and fly high.
